I have been making the portraits of living traditional musicians for many years. Friends, mentors, and those who inspire me. I have rarely painted the portraits of musicians from the past. Their story was not mine to tell. However, I was recently reading a book about the Mississippi blues artist Tommy Jonson written by David Evans and was inspired to make a portrait of him.
Knowing that Johnson's image and his music belong to his own family, I asked David Evans put me in touch with Tommy Johnson’s niece, Vera who runs the Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation out of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. With Vera’s permission, I am selling this portrait and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation.
